Renal Ride Nullarbor - 2008
My name is Margie Raynor and I am a recreational cyclist when I am not teaching.
I've been cycling for kidney disease since cycling the Nullarbor in 2005. In 2007, I cycled around Australia, solo and unsupported, a distance of 19,200km. Many generous people donated to Kidney Health Australia and many warm-hearted people encouraged me and offered long lasting friendship and hospitality during my ride.
My aim is to cycle every major highway in Australia, raising funds and awareness of kidney disease. So far, I'm the only person I know who has cycled Australia for kidney disease but I'm hoping that with my goal to undertake an annual long distance cycle, more cyclists will be encouraged to get on the saddle and join in.
This year, I will be cycling a distance of approx 3000km from Perth to Adelaide via Kalgoorlie, in September-October, making this my third solo ride across the Nullarbor in 3 years. I hope to visit schools and hospitals along the way, encouraging local communities’ awareness of the need to promote and maintain optimal kidney health and reduce the potential of being one of the 2 million Australians already affected by early stage kidney disease without knowing it.
Woodcroft Primary School students and teacher Rick Berry will again be tracking my journey and contacting various schools along the way. Once again, this trip is self-funded, enabling all generous donations to benefit much needed research for kidney health.
We urge Australian companies to get behind this important venture so that the statistic of 11.3% of all deaths in Australia, currently associated with kidney failure, will be drastically reduced.
Renal Ride Australia - 07
Margie completed her epic 19 000 km journey around Australia in October '07 (see Renal Ride 07 website). We congratulate Margie for the awesome work and effort put in and we now urge
all visitors to this site to donate on Margie's behalf to Kidney Research.
Renal Ride Nullarbor - 05
In October 2005 Margie completed an 11 day ride across the Nullarbor for Kidney Health Australia. ABC Radio in Adelaide interviewed her before, during and after the
ride. Margie obtained generous sponsorship from many companies. (see Renal Ride 05 website)
